my intro to my experiences...
Keep in mind that while it seems like the list is long - I am incredibly thrifty and would be happy to share advice on how to save money in specific situations if you ask. You'd be surprised at how little I've spent. One quick thing: check out http://euroflights.info. It looks rather unprofessional, but it can connect you to some of the cheapest airlines for whatever region you are lucky enough to be traveling.
So a brief list of things I've done in/near Europe over the past 4 years, by country:
-traveled all around northern France with a school group for a few weeks
-stayed with a nice french family in Angers for a couple weeks
-spent a week hopping around Paris
-spent a weekend partying in the Latin Quarter of Paris
-Visitied Barcelona alone... as a blond, single, white girl. (use your imagination)
-took a nice tour along the river down the whole western side of Germany
-took a 2 week trip with a friend through Milano, Cinque Terre, Firenze, Pisa, and Roma. All hostels and trains for transportation.
-went back a couple years later for another hiking trip in the Cinque Terre.
-Lived and studied in Louvain-la-Neuve in Wallonia (French Belgium) for 5 months.
-Spent lots of time in Brussels, as well as visiting Antwerp, Leuven, Ghent, Bruges, etc.
-Ate a hash brownie in Amsterdam.... to partake in the culture.
-Visited Den Hague, and the cute little village of Delft. (very traditional)
-Spent some time wandering the beach by the North Sea.
-Only visited London - but all of the traditional sites in about 4 days.
-Slept on the floor at Stansted airport.... for those of you who are reaaaally cheap.
-Planned a one week trip around Athena, Korinthos, Sunion, Aegina, etc.
-Avoided the touristy islands.
-Stayed in a really really crappy hostel.
-Spent the requisite day wandering around and enjoying the sites. Don't go on Sunday. Everything is closed.
-Spent a whirlwind weekend exploring.
-Stayed in Edinburgh
-Took a tour all the way up through the highlands to Loch Ness
-Spent the most amazing 4 days in a great hostel in Budapest where the owner's mom cooked all the food.
-Travelled alone and learned only 3 words in Hungarian: Beer, Thanks, Cheers.
-Checked out the Hungarian baths.
-stayed for 4 or 5 days near the tynska in Prague during the world cup.
-Decided Prague is a bit too commercialized for my liking.
-Spent less than 100 dollars.
-Couchsurfed for 10 days through Marrakech, Essaouira, Casablanca, Rabat, and Fes.
-Took a mountain tour and rode a camel into the dessert where we stayed with nomads in a tent.
-Fell in love. with everything.
-Traveled alone through Krakow, Katowice, and Oswiecim (Auschwitz).
-Visited the concentration camps.
-Ate delicious Pierogi.
-Hitchhiked from the train station.
-Spent 2 1/2 weeks traveling back and forth from Istanbul to visit and stay with a friend's family who spoke only Turkish.
-Visited Istanbul, Kutahya, Pummakule, Ephesus, Izmir, Cesme, etc.
-Learned some amazing recipes.
-Got amazing deals in the markets while I was there alone.
-Stayed in Copenhagen with the super expensive city transportation pass.
-Slept at the train station in Basel.
-Went canyoning in the Saxeten Gorge. (jumping off of cliffs and waterfalls, etc.)
-Rented mopeds to explore the mountains for a day.
